In a project conducted by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, it was found that learning a musical instrument can help children reduce anxiety, better control their emotions, and effectively improve their concentration.
The study also noted that learning a musical instrument gives children the opportunity to improve and express their creativity while learning new skills.
The MRI Brain Development Study was initiated by the National Institutes of Health in the United States and the subjects were children and adolescents aged between 6 and 18 years old. A total of 232 children participated.
Each participant underwent MRI scans and behavioral tests on up to three different occasions, with two years between each occasion. In addition to the brain scan data, the researchers also explored the participants’ IQ and music training data.
The authors also mentioned that music training was associated with cortical thickening in brain regions associated with executive function, controlling emotions and emotional processing, as well as memory, attention control, organization and future planning.
